Jahiliyyah — Age of Ignorance

~500 AD

Jahiliyyah (Arabic: ‘ignorance’ or ‘barbarism’) is the Islamic designation for the pre-Islamic period in Arabia — not total ignorance, but specifically ignorance of divine guidance and monotheistic truth. The term frames Islamic history: humanity before the Quran was operating without proper revelation. The Jahiliyyah era is also one of the great periods of Arabic literary achievement — the seven Mu’allaqat (‘suspended odes’) are considered masterpieces of world poetry, celebrating tribal honor, martial valor, love, and the harsh beauty of desert life. Tribal Arabia in this period was characterized by internecine warfare, blood feuds (sometimes lasting generations), infanticide of female babies (strongly condemned by the Quran), slavery, and the absence of any overarching political authority. It is precisely into this fractured, violent, polytheistic world that Islam emerges as a radical transformation.
