Cochin Community
~70 AD
The Cochin community of Kerala belongs to the Malabar Coast, one of the great commercial zones of the Indian Ocean. Its traditions connect ancient sea trade, copper-plate privileges, local rulers, and later arrivals from West Asia and Iberian exile routes. The community developed distinctive synagogues, Malayalam-based culture, and close ties to spice commerce.
Cochin sits downstream from the broader eastern diaspora movement into India. It later interacted with Bene Israel and Baghdadi arrivals, but its Malabar setting remained distinct. The map treats Cochin as a successor within the Indian Ocean branch rather than as a pre-70 trunk stream.
