Nabataean Kingdom

~400 BC — 106 AD

The Nabataeans were a sophisticated Arab civilization centered at Petra (in modern Jordan) who built one of the ancient world’s most remarkable cities in rose-red sandstone. At their height (1st century BC — 1st century AD) they controlled the incense trade routes connecting Arabia Felix (Yemen), the Persian Gulf, and the Mediterranean. The Nabataean script — a flowing cursive form of Aramaic — is the direct ancestor of the modern Arabic alphabet. The Nabataean kingdom was absorbed into the Roman Empire as Arabia Petraea in 106 AD. Their trade networks connected Arabia to the Hellenistic, Roman, and Persian worlds, bringing commercial prosperity and cultural exchange to the Arabian Peninsula and shaping the mercantile culture that Mecca would later inherit.
