Galilean Rabbinic Judaism
~135 AD
After the Bar Kokhba revolt and Hadrian’s devastation of Judea (135 AD), the center of Rabbinic Judaism shifts north to the Galilee. The surviving rabbinic authorities reconstitute at Usha, then move to Sepphoris and finally Tiberias. The Patriarchate (Nasi), held by descendants of Hillel, functions as the official Jewish leadership recognized by Rome. The great Tannaim of this period — Rabbi Meir, Rabbi Judah bar Ilai, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai — continue the work of Mishnah compilation that culminates under Rabbi Judah HaNasi (~200 AD). Tiberias becomes the preeminent center of Palestinian Judaism for centuries.
