Operation Solomon

1991 AD

Sources: Israeli government records; Ethiopian transitional government accounts; air force and Jewish Agency documentation; Beta Israel family histories.

Operation Solomon took place in May 1991 as Ethiopia’s Mengistu regime collapsed. In a rapid airlift lasting roughly thirty-six hours, Israeli aircraft transported more than fourteen thousand Ethiopian Jews to Israel. The operation was negotiated under urgent political and military pressure, with concern that civil war and regime change could trap the remaining community. Aircraft were stripped of seats to maximize capacity, and the airlift became one of the most dramatic mass evacuations in Israeli history.

Solomon differed from Moses and Joshua because it moved a very large population directly from Addis Ababa rather than through Sudanese camps. It reunited many families but also brought new challenges: religious status debates, language barriers, housing, employment, education, and discrimination. Ethiopian Israelis later became an important part of Israeli military, cultural, religious, and protest life. The operation is remembered as a rescue achievement and as the beginning of a difficult struggle for equality and recognition.
