Italian Israelite Community (Italkim)
~160 BC
Israelite presence in Italy predates the Roman destruction of Jerusalem. Early movement came through diplomacy, trade, manumission, military displacement, and Mediterranean urban migration. Rome and southern Italian ports were tied to the eastern Mediterranean long before 70 AD, making Italy a natural western landing point for communities connected to the Second Temple world.
The later Italkim preserve an old Italian rite and communal memory distinct from later northern and Iberian arrivals. The pre-70 root, however, is simply Mediterranean Israelite movement into Roman territory. Because the map does not yet include a dedicated medieval Italian successor, this stream is left as an early western endpoint.
